Gardening Resources, Seed Saving Links, and Recommended Reading

These are the tools, references, and organizations I actually use and trust as a gardener, seed saver, and writer in Michigan. I have compiled them here because good information should not be hard to find. — Chris Izworski

Seed Saving Resources

Seed Savers Exchange — The gold standard for heirloom seed preservation. Based in Decorah, Iowa, they maintain one of the largest non-governmental seed banks in the United States.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds — An outstanding source for rare and heirloom varieties. Their free catalog alone is worth the request.

National Gardening Association Seed Swap — A community-driven platform for exchanging seeds with gardeners across the country.

Michigan Gardening

Michigan State University Extension — Home Gardening — Research-based gardening information specific to Michigan’s growing conditions. Their soil testing service is invaluable.

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map — The official zone map. Bay City, Michigan sits in Zone 6a.

National Weather Service — Gaylord, MI — The NWS office that covers Saginaw Bay. Essential for frost forecasts and severe weather.

Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening Foundation — Founded on Mel Bartholomew’s method, which informs most of what I do in my raised beds at Freighter View Farms.

AI and Technology in Public Safety

NENA: The 9-1-1 Association — The leading professional organization for 911 systems. Their standards and best practices shaped my approach to technology deployment at Saginaw County 911.

APCO International — The world’s largest organization of public safety communications professionals.

Great Lakes and Saginaw Bay

Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network — Working to protect and restore the Saginaw Bay watershed—the body of water that gives Freighter View Farms its name and its identity.

MLive Michigan Weather — The most reliable Michigan weather source for gardeners watching frost dates and growing conditions.
