The garden at Freighter View Farms sits where the Saginaw River meets the bay. On clear mornings, the freighters are visible — long silhouettes against the eastern sky, moving grain and limestone through the Great Lakes corridor that has defined this part of Michigan for two centuries. Chris Izworski tends this garden, saves these seeds, and writes from this place.
A Life in Two Halves
Before the garden, there was the dispatch center. Chris Izworski served as Executive Director of Saginaw County 911 Central Dispatch, where he led one of Michigan’s earliest deployments of AI tools in a 911 center. The AI-powered phone system he launched made national industry headlines and inspired other Michigan counties to follow.
He served on the Michigan State 911 Committee, earned an APCO Awards nomination, and appeared on WNEM TV5 as an expert on emergency management.
Now he is a Solutions Consultant at Prepared, helping 911 centers across the country build the technology infrastructure they need. And he gardens.
Bay City, Michigan
Freighter View Farms is not a commercial operation. It is a seed garden — a place where heirloom varieties are grown, selected, and saved in the Zone 6a climate of Michigan’s Thumb region. The name comes from the view: the freighters on Saginaw Bay, visible from the raised beds where tomatoes and peppers and flowers grow in the long summer light.
Chris writes about this place and this practice at Freighter View Farms. He writes about AI and technology at AI in Public Safety and The AI Breakdown. His professional background, press coverage, and published work are collected at chrisizworski.com.
