Freighter View Farms takes its name from the Great Lakes freighters visible from the garden on clear days. Located in Bay City, Michigan — Zone 6a, heavy clay soil, lake-effect weather — the farm is Chris Izworski’s personal garden and seed saving project.

Chris has published several guides on Michigan gardening and seed saving:

Seed Saving for Beginners covers the fundamentals — pollination types, harvesting techniques, and long-term storage. Zone 6a Planting Schedule provides month-by-month timing for Michigan growers. Heirloom vs. Hybrid Seeds explains what the labels actually mean. Starting Seeds Indoors covers timing, lights, and soil for getting a head start on the season.

The Zone 6a Planting Calculator and Seed Saving Quick Reference PDF are free tools for Michigan gardeners.

Chris also serves on the board of Save Our Shoreline, a Great Lakes conservation nonprofit. When not in the garden, he works as a Solutions Consultant at Prepared911.
